7 steps to the perfect work trousers

More than 150 different work trouser models by engelbert strauss

Most people have good tools and work shoes, but tend not to think about their work trousers. You often see people wearing jeans or other trousers on the building site. But as soon as it rains, denim becomes soaked and the trousers remain heavy and wet for hours making the legs cold. But this can be avoided. Modern work trousers offer so much more than classic jeans. They protect the wearer, provide lots of pockets for mobile phones, tools etc. and are also very comfortable and sporty. For instance, anyone who works outdoors all day needs workwear that is very durable and offers protection against the wind and weather. Forest ranges need cut-protection trousers to protect their legs. Workers who spend a lot of time on their knees need work trousers with knee pad pockets. As you can see, it is not that easy to find the right work trousers, which is why we have issued a guide to help you make the right decision. At engelbert strauss, you can choose from 150 different models ranging from inexpensive work jeans through to cut protection trousers – both online and also in the catalogue.

Before we look at the specific collections, we would like to give you some advice about how to buy trousers, because good work trousers not only offer you excellent freedom of movement, but also extreme comfort and helpful features.

Step 1 – Measure!

Nothing is more annoying than trousers that keep slipping down as soon as you bend over or don’t fit properly. That’s why choosing the right size is important. So, what to do?

First of all you need to take your measurements correctly (measured with underwear, without shoes):

  • Height: Measure your height.
  • Waistband: Without pulling the measuring tape too tight, measure around the waistband.
  • Waist: Without pulling the measuring tape too tight, measure around the waist (approx. 3 cm above your hipbone).
  • Seat measurement: Measure horizontally across the widest part of your bottom.
  • Inside leg: The distance from the sole of the foot (inside) to the crutch.

Jot down these figures and open our workwear size table HERE.

Based on height, there are three different size models for the men’s and women’s collections to ensure absolute comfort: an extra long leg for tall and slim people, clever multi-width solutions and standard sizes for men and women.

Step 2 – What type of trousers do you prefer?

The engelbert strauss range includes work shorts, standard trousers through to bib&braces. Decide for yourself which trousers are best suited for your work.

Step 3 – Features of your new work trousers

Reinforcements on areas subject to heavy wear

When buying trousers, ensure that those areas that are subject to wear every day are reinforced. There are numerous models available online with reinforced knee zones made of very durable material. The work trousers of the e.s.roughtough and e.s.dynashield collections also have triple seams in areas that are subject to wear.

Knee pad pockets

If you have to work on your knees at lot, we recommend that you buy trousers with knee pad pockets, so when you need added protection, you can simply slide the pads into the pockets Knee pads.

Pockets

As far as pockets are concerned, it is usually a matter of personal preference and profession. Anyone who wants to wear their trousers outside of work, may want to opt for a model with just a few subtle pockets on the trouser leg. Anyone who loves to have everything with them in their pockets will appreciate the spacious leg and back pockets with space for yardsticks, mobile phone and tools. However, it is important that the function and freedom of movement of the trousers is not impaired by laden pockets.

Reflectors

Do you work in the forest or in poor light conditions on the road? Lots of the engelbert strauss work trousers have subtle reflectors that will protect you in the dark. If these are inadequate, opt for our high-vis protective trousers with high-quality reflectors.

Material

Very important: The material should be selected based on your profession and the weather conditions!

Cotton workwear is soft to the touch and pleasant on the skin. The natural fibres stand out thanks to their ability to absorb moisture, their durability and great tear-resistance; however cotton takes a long time to dry.

Workwear made of synthetic materials is very light-fast and weather resistant. The material makes the trousers very durable, easy-care and fast-drying.

Fabrics made of cotton and polyester have lots of benefits when used to make workwear. Cotton absorbs the moisture reliably and the polyester ensures that the fabric dries quickly again. Artificial fibre fabrics made of polyester or polyamide do not absorb as much moisture, but they do remove the moisture and transport it outwards very quickly.

There are also specially coated trousers for the rain that offer reliable protection against the wet, whilst also keeping the wind and draughts away from the body.

Step 4 – What collection is best suited for my line of work?

There are also special trousers specifically designed for particular professions e.g. trousers with cut protection inserts, welder’s trousers made of special fabric mixes to protect against heat and flames, chef’s trousers, healthcare trousers or high-vis protection trousers in bright signal colours.

Step 5 – Wearing test and wearing comfort

The right cut is essential for comfort. If you have to kneel or bend over a lot at work, you need to test the freedom of movement offered by the trousers. Squat down and simulate those movements you carry out on a daily basis at work. If the trousers do not slip, pinch or constrict you, you have found the right model in the right size. Now nothing can stop you!

TIP: Wear your work shoes when testing the garments to see if the trousers are long enough.

Step 6 – How do I wash my work trousers?

In many professions, work trousers are exposed to fluids such as oil and other pollutants. How do I wash my work trousers correctly?

Before you wash your work trousers, empty all pockets. Any nails or tools left in the pockets can destroy your garments or the washing machine. Then do up all zips so that they cannot damage any other garments.

Sort your workwear according to colour and read the care tag to check the maximum temperature at which you can wash your trousers.

It is advised that you use the e.s. washing powder ‘colour plus’. This is a high-performance washing powder that is very effective at removing even stubborn stains and dirt. It was specially developed for coloured textiles and personalised workwear. This means that garments can be cleaned intensively even at low temperatures. It is gentle on the fibres and protects colours and applications.

Last step – Round off your workwear outfit

engelbert strauss not only supplies work trousers but also modern, sporty workwear that allows team outfits to be created and also offers a high level of individuality to each employee. Like in the modular system, the individual parts of the workwear collections can be colour coordinated. For example, in addition to work jackets, work trousers & shirts, there is a large range of accessories for combining with these garments. Even the work shoes and safety shoes are trimmed to match the designs and colours of the company outfits; you can order all the items you need from one source with one order.

If you have any more questions or want to find out more about individual products, we will be happy to advise you. Just send us an e-mail or call us and we will help you find the right products for you.

ENJOY WORK!
